The Collection of Glass Paintings

One of the most beautiful creations of folk art was painting on glass. Such paintings with religious motifs embellished the interior of rural houses from the 18th to the first half of the 20th century.

The exhibition introduces the history of painting on glass, sheds light upon the time and territory where the majority of the exhibited paintings were created, and outlines the working process in painters’ workshop as well as the final selling. With some exceptions, all the exhibited paintings originate from workshops that developed around glassworks in Bohemia and in Sandl in northern Austria at the end of the 18th century and in the 19th century.

Exhibited are the reconstruction of painters’ workshops and the paintings with the most popular religious motifs in vibrant colours that somehow magically completed the so-called “bohkov kot”- the corner where the crucifix was hung.
